Exploring Heritage & Honour: Tour of Duty Adelaide 2025

March 31, 2025 |

From 17 to 23 March 2025, forty enthusiastic members embarked on an unforgettable journey—the self-funded Tour of Duty to Adelaide and its picturesque surrounds. Staying at the centrally-located Grand Chancellor Hotel, participants experienced a thoughtfully curated itinerary crafted by President Peter Hodgson alongside Deb Thatcher, Barrie Morgan, and Jess Welfare.

The adventure began in earnest with a warm welcome at the historic Torrens Parade Ground, meeting RSL South Australia’s CEO Tara Belton. Tara shared insightful plans for enhancing veteran support and membership growth. President Hodgson commemorated this meaningful exchange with a plaque, symbolizing the deep connection between our communities.

Participants took advantage of free afternoons to explore Adelaide’s rich memorials and vibrant city culture at their own pace, soaking up both history and leisure.

A highlight was the journey to the celebrated Barossa Valley, blending reverence and relaxation. The day began with solemn respects at Greenock War Memorial, followed by delightful camaraderie at the Greenock Hotel, set amidst iconic vineyards.

The SA Aviation Museum and the National Railway Museum in Port Adelaide brought forth intriguing historical discoveries. Members also received a warm greeting from President Derek Meadows at the Port Adelaide Semaphore RSL, culminating in another heartfelt presentation by President Hodgson.

Victor Harbor unveiled the poignant HMAS Hobart Memorial, especially significant to member Colin Benporath, who proudly served aboard during its commissioning in 1965.

The tour’s scenic crescendo involved the charming town of Hahndorf and McLaren Vale’s acclaimed wine district, perfectly rounding out the week’s memorable experiences. The sophisticated “Dine in Dinner” provided an elegant farewell evening for everyone involved.
Finally, the fascinating Keswick Barracks and Army Museum rekindled cherished memories, particularly for member Ruth Raspa, who began her service journey at this very location.

This memorable Tour of Duty not only honoured history and heritage but strengthened bonds among our members. Congratulations to all involved—your participation made this journey truly special.
