A group of North Beach RSL members recently had the privilege of visiting Wheelchairs for Kids, an inspiring charity that transforms the lives of children with disabilities worldwide. Our visit was organized at the invitation of Graham Edwards AM, the Charity Patron, who has long been a champion for veteran and disability causes.
A Vision of Compassion: Brother Olly’s Mission
We were warmly welcomed by Brother Thomas Oliver (Olly) Pickett AM, a retired Christian Brother and co-founder of Wheelchairs for Kids. His dedication to helping children in need was recognized when he was named Senior Australian of the Year 2025—an honor well deserved for his decades of service.
Brother Olly, originally a metalwork teacher, first designed a prototype wheelchair from second-hand materials. Though his initial attempts faced challenges, he remained determined to refine his design. Today, his perseverance has paid off, with over 62,000 custom-built wheelchairs distributed to children in need across the globe. His story is a testament to resilience, innovation, and the power of community-driven action.

This level of care and detail ensures that each wheelchair is more than just a mobility aid—it’s a gift of dignity, independence, and hope.
How You Can Support This Incredible Cause
Wheelchairs for Kids relies heavily on donations to continue their vital work. Every contribution helps them source materials, fund production, and deliver wheelchairs to children in need, particularly in underprivileged communities.
If you’d like to support their mission, consider making a donation or even volunteering your time. It’s a deeply rewarding experience, and for those in Perth, a visit to their workshop is highly recommended!
Our morning at Wheelchairs for Kids was both eye-opening and inspiring. Seeing the direct impact of this organization’s work reaffirmed the power of community, generosity, and perseverance in making a real difference.
