When a member of the North Beach RSL Sub-Branch passes away, it is both a privilege and a responsibility to offer support to their family and ensure that their service is acknowledged respectfully.
One meaningful way we can honour our late comrades is by offering a Poppy Service—also known as an RSL Tribute—as part of the funeral or remembrance proceedings.
This guide provides suggestions (not rules) for members who are liaising with families after the death of a veteran. Each situation is unique, and the following points should be adapted to suit the preferences and circumstances of the family and the funeral organisers.
Key Points to Raise with the Family
- Ask Permission Respectfully “Would your family be open to including a short Poppy Service during the funeral to honour [Veteran’s Name]’s service?” This is a short, respectful tribute carried out by Sub-Branch representatives or chaplains.
- Clarify Funeral Details If the family is supportive, ask:
- Are veterans welcome to attend?
- May we notify Sub-Branch members?
- Is a Guard of Honour requested?
- Is there an appointed Chaplain or Celebrant we can liaise with?
- Explain the Poppy Service The Poppy Service typically occurs just before the committal, allowing mourners and fellow veterans to:
- Honour the veteran’s military service.
- Place a poppy on the casket.
- Join in the Ode, Last Post, and Rouse.
- Offer Personalisation If known, offer to include:
- A short Service Record or Eulogy.
- A favourite poem (e.g., In Flanders Fields).
- Mention of Sub-Branch roles or community service.
What the Family Can Expect
- The service is short, solemn, and respectful.
- Veterans and service personnel present are invited to stand in honour.
- Family members may place a poppy or rosemary sprig on the casket, if desired.
- Sub-Branch members will wear jackets and medals.
Optional Addition: Wall of Remembrance Plaques
Families who wish to create a lasting tribute may request a plaque on the Wall of Remembrance at our memorial site. Please contact the Sub-Branch Secretary for details.
Final Note
This guide is intended to support compassionate and respectful conversations with grieving families. Each family will have their own wishes, and our goal is to offer them the opportunity—not an obligation—for their loved one to be honoured through RSL traditions.
Lest We Forget.
