News Review June Congress

Message from the President

Welcome to this special edition of our News Review.

RSLWA State Congress was held Saturday 10 June 2023 and was attended by Peter Bowring, Wayne Koch, David King, Les Young and myself.

During the Congress voting was conducted for all Board positions, and as a result the following were elected:

One of the important and rewarding aspects of the Congress was the announcement of the various awards.  These are:

The LT COL Ken Bladen Recruiting ShieldOpen to ALL Sub-Branches with more than 60 financial members.  Judged on the number of new members recruited for the year in relation to Sub-Branch financial membership.  30 SBs competed for this trophy.Port Kennedy RSL Sub-Branch
The Denis Connelly Recruiting Shield  Open to ALL Sub-Branches with less than 60 financial members Judged on the number of new members recruited for the year in relation to Sub-Branch membership.  100 SBs competed for this trophy.Bedford Morley RSL Sub-Branch

It is very pleasing and a reflection on the efforts of ALL members of our Sub-Branch that we were awarded the Newdegate Cup for all round performance.  We also won The Mary Cornell Trophy for our Poppy Collections leading up to and including Remembrance Day.  Thanks go to Peter Bowring and all the collection teams involved; it was a great effort. 

Being awarded the Newdegate Cup is a reflection on our members, and our Sub-Branch.  The criteria for judging covers many aspects of Sub-Branch operations, and includes:

GOVERNANCEAnnual Financial Statement lodged in State Branch by the nominated date. ANZAC Day Grant acquittal being received in State Branch by nominated due date. ANZAC Appeal Financial Statement being received in State Branch 2 weeks after appeal. Poppy Appeal Financial Statement being received in State Branch by 2 weeks after appeal. General Insurance Questionnaire lodged in State Branch by 30 June.
MEMBERSHIPThe increase of Service and Affiliate membership.
WELFARE AND ADVOCACYOfficers performing this role and activities undertaken.
COMMEMORATIONDetails of commemorations undertaken by the Sub-Branch.
TELLING OUR STORYSub-Branch participation in Youth and Community Activities.. Involvement with ADF Cadets Involvement with serving ADF members and Families. Upcoming Commemoration Events

PREVELLY CHAPEL MEMORIAL  Saturday 29 July 2023

At St John The Theologian Chapel, Prevelly, a commemorative service will be held to remember the late Geoffrey Edwards of the 2/11th Infantry Battalion, and the role played by the people of Crete in rescuing allied soldiers on the 28 July 1941 during the Battle of Crete.

UNVEILING OF PERTH KOREAN WAR MEMORIAL  10:45am   Thursday 27 July 2023

Tobruk Memorial Precinct, intersection saw Avenue and May Drive, Kings Park.

Perth Korean War Memorial (pkwm.org.au)

The unveiling is expected to be performed by the Premier and His Excellency Mr Kim Wan-joong, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Australia.  The unveiling will be followed by a commemorative service which also marks the 70th Anniversary of the Armistice.

The 10 tonne centrepiece stone is from the Kapyong Valley in Korea, a significant battle site where 3 RAR was awarded the Presidential Citation.  The Battle of Kapyong is commemorated each year on 24 April by 3 RAR.

ANNUAL SANDAKAN COMMEMORATION 

Sunday 20 August 2023 (time to be advised)

Sandakan Prisoner of War Memorial, Marri Walk, Kings Park.

This memorial commemorates over 3400 Australian and British Prisoners of War who died at Sandakan, on the Ranau Death Marches, at Ranau, Kuching, Jesselton and other POW camps.  The deaths were as a result of enforced marches, neglect, starvation, mass executions and from various tropical diseases with no treatment provided. 

This will be a commemoration service with guest speaker, Graham Edwards AM.
